If you are looking for cheap train tickets, then you are too early. About four months too early. Cheap tickets are not released before twelve weeks before travel, and sometimes/usually not that early.
However, I've just looked at out on 25 Nov and back on 2 Dec.
Can be done for £63.50 each way per adult, from either Exeter or Tiverton.
In theory, Advance Singles could be available for £20.00.
Have you thought about flying?
Flybe from Exeter to Edinburgh 19 Apr £47.10 per adult
Flybe from Edinburgh to Exeter 26 Apr £43.20 per adult0 -
wow flying is cheaper than i thought it would be, thats quite a good price. but the advance single is really good. so are you saying they are £20??how early can i buy them??0

If you are flying, buy your tickets as soon as you have the money to pay for them and know that you definitely want to go - best deals are months ahead, but then it costs a lot to cancel or change.
For the train
1 I use www.nationalexpresseastcoast as they give a discount for booking online and don't charge a booking fee or credit card fee. (The name is a bit confusing as you can use them for any trip, not just east coast ones).
2 They also tell you how far ahead you can book, e.g. today you can book up as far as Dec 12th. Obviously, if you can bag the cheap tickets as soon as they are released that's the cheapest bet.
3 Try to avoid weekends as they tend to be dearer/slower.
4 I doubt you'd get it as cheap as £40 return - you could ask at your local station what the absolute cheapest is.
5 Worth getting a family railcard for a journey of this length if you don't already have one.
Hope that helps. Edinburgh is a great city - the Science festival is usually good and lots of other stuff to see/do too. Hope you make it.0 -

thankyou, i have been once before, and i flew, but it was paid for for me. and i didnt take the children, but this time it is just me and my 2 boys. i saved on the accomodation, as i booked through the travelodge site (which i'm hoping is fairly near the castle!) so if i get really stuck and find transport really expensive i can cancel, but my boys wont be to happy about that. i didnt really think it would be quite as much as it is, when i have recently purchased return tickets on eurostar for £59 return to paris!!
thankyou for your help:)0 -

If you've booked the Travel Lodge in St Mary's Street then it's 10-15 mins walk to the castle and if you walk the same distance in the other direction you can all climb Arthur's Seat and get a great view of the city for free too !0 -
I just booked tickets for December for £29.60 return (total for one adult, two children, with railcard).I'm not travelling quite as far as you-but we're four hours away so it isn't a short hop. I'm sure you'll be able to get train tickets for under £40 per head (plus the costs of getting to/from the airport), even if you have to buy the railcard...just book three months in advance.import this0

It goes a long way towards explaining why the prices you are finding are "a bit wrong".
Perhaps you should also re-read my earlier reply on this thread for more info.0
