Hello well it my dds bday on the 29th and i really dont want to be spending a fortune on ready made food etc like i have always done...
First of i will make her bday cake (wish me luck...) so has any body got a easy no fail receipy for a cake?? Just a sponge one - have tried before and never get it just right
.....
Also i will invite the family round on the sunday and normally would buy lots of things like sausage rolls etc etc etc....cost loads and half always gets wasted.... Was thinking of maybe doing something in the slow cooker which people could just help themself to with some nice crusty bread or something..... but mind is blank on what i could do.... (can i blame baby brain
)
Also last she will be having a party but was think about party bags and they always get a load of little toys which get broken within the first day ore lost.... so has anyone got a idea for what i could do instead?? what 6yrs olds will like but isnt a complete waste of money and time....
Thank you all for reading and thanks in advance for any replys....

My boys birthday is the 29th as well.
I have found in the past that all the children that have been to one of my boys parties have loved bubbles. You can get a pack of about 10 from pound shops.
The trick to passing off a fab cake is to make enough of them and layer them up and cover with butter cream..lol.
Unfortunately I havent gone for the OS party his year and have booked a place at £15 per child, minimum 10kids!! Not quite sure how ill pay for it, but something will turn up..lol.
Hope yours has a great birthday.May £10 a day challenge£19.61/£310Ebay challenge...£12.61/£2000 -
If your cake isn't going right, it's probably because you're not whisking it enough. When you cream your marg and sugar, so it until it's white, without a hint of yellow. When you add the eggs, again make sure it goes white.
You can do this.:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.0 -
notlongnow - hope he has a good bday - we are having a party with her friends which is not os as its at pizzahut - but trying to make it as os as i can and the family party will be as im fed up of wasting money on things that are not as yummy as home made ones....ill try!!lol
whitewing - thank you it is prob the mixing as i have got a electric hand wisk but my dd2 is scared of it so i havent be using it recently and they used to be fine.... she starts preschool this week so think ill give it a go when she is there.... will make sure i do it till its white thank youGC: Nov: £60.22/£450 Oct: £338.48/£450, July: £363.05/£450, June £447.98/£500£2 savers No68: £104/£100 :j:jmummy to: 8yr, 5yr, 3yr, 2yr, 1yr. For your family munch-it-all, how about making a BIG lasagne in a roasting tin? You can mark it into squares to discourage the gannets from taking too much. Served with crusty or garlic bread and a salad that would be fine, I would have thought. On a similar note, chili con carne also works - depends if everyone is happy with "spicy" though. You can pad both out with lentils or beans.
Don't fret it with the cake: smother in butter icing or chocolate butter icing and dot liberally with maltesers, chocolate buttons or similar, and the little darling won't even notice what the cake's like!
Party bags: 6-year-old girls like bubbles; stickers, beads/bracelets, notebooks, gel or felt pens and sweets. And more sweets. I run a Rainbow unit, and am liberal with all of the above. Pots of bubbles you can get for zilcho in pound shops; ditto if you buy a pack of stickers and give them each one sheet. If you buy a hank of scoobies and some cheap plastic beads you can have them making their own bracelets or necklaces which they LOVE. Tiny notebooks or rubbers, plus a pack of small gel pens split up and they get one each are brillo. Then go to Lidl and get their party pack of sweeties - there are LOADS in a packet and you just divide 'em up.0 -
Choc cake? 6 oz margarine, 6 oz sugar, 3 eggs, 5 oz self-raising flour, 3 oz drinking chocolate (not cocoa, and not the sort of 'instant' drinking choc where you only add water - it needs to be the old-fashioned Cadburys style but you can use any brand), 3 tablespoons boiling water. Mix well, put in any tin, bake at 180 degrees or Gas 4 until it's done, which depends on the size of the tin. You can even microwave it (but then it doesn't keep, you need to eat it straight away).
I've made it a million times, my 21 year old son has never had a different birthday cake and has never complained! People who taste it think it has loads of real chocolate in it, but it's really cheap to make and so yummy. I make loads to give as presents, as they freeze really well and can just be pulled out and decorated on the day you want to give them away.
You can use orange juice instead of water and add the grated rind of an orange, put in chocolate chips or nuts, and cover it with anything you like - chocolate buttercream and smarties are pretty niceand the best thing is, it's foolproof. If anything goes wrong (like you break it while you're getting it out of the tin), either put it in bowls and eat for pudding with custard, or 'glue' it back together with chocolate or buttercream!

If shes 6 how about having a princess party - stick a Disney DVD on in the background with princesses in then paint their nails, do their hair, etc. You can pick up nail varnishes from Pound shops.
Then you could give them a party bag based on this - a nail varnish inside and a little soap or expanding flannel. Or you could just say no party bags. I don't remember ever getting a party bag when I was young.Me, OH, grown DS, (other DS left home) and Mum (coming up 80!). Considering foster parenting. Hints and tips on saving £ always well received. Xx
March 1st week £80 includes a new dog bed though £63 was food etc for the week.0 -

Lasagna is a good idea though i love it and i know most people like spag bol so hope they like this aswell..... I would love to do some chilli with some JAcket pots but i dont think the fil would eat it grrrr.......
The chocolate cake sounds yummy!! I love chocolate so might give it a go this week to see what its like then if i dont make a mess of it do it for her bday.... yum yum
I would love to do her a princess party but she is not a girly girl!! my dd2 loves pink and girly bits so i hope i get to do the more girly bits for her bdays.........
Thanks for all your ideas.... I was thinking i could maybe just make some cookies or something to give the kiddies instead of party bags... or little cupcakes?? will have more of a think......GC: Nov: £60.22/£450 Oct: £338.48/£450, July: £363.05/£450, June £447.98/£500£2 savers No68: £104/£100 :j:jmummy to: 8yr, 5yr, 3yr, 2yr, 1yr. Why not do the jacket potatoes and chilli, plus another slow cooked thing that your fil might like..... mild curry maybe or if he is very traditional foodwise, maybe a chicken chausseur style casserole?
This would be really easy to do especially if you could borrow a second slow cooker for the event
Major bonus is that any leftovers can be frozen for dinners later0 -
Just to mention I also got fed up with the disposable nature of party bags so for the last two years we have given first of all, a pair of winter gloves stuffed with sweets a balloon and a bouncy ball and the next year a woolly hat similarly stuffed.
Both children and parents liked this.C.R.A.P.R.O.L.L.Z Able Archer0 -
