  • longer term investment ;):p

with this volatility I'm not sure I'll be around to reap the rewards - i'm going to have some very violent panic attacks ;)

Be aware that Natwest have recently switched to using RBS managed funds, and are running down their old ISA funds. They're not communicating this to customers though. Call your Natwest investment advisor and ask him about switching to the new funds - they waive the initial charges, and there are better options...
A bit of a break I know as I've tried burying my head in the sand hoping everything will be all right. It is an RBS managed fund that I have; is this a good thing then considering the present climate?

It's up to you. Its a risk based investment and when you invest you look at potential. For the long term, the potential looks very good given the low prices. In the short term it will remain volatile (which for monthly payments isnt a bad thing). If you do increase then perhaps use a different sector to make sure you diversify.

So when you diversify should you go for location, location/sector or just sector? For instance my investments have 18% in USA (lol) and hardly anything (couple of %) in Europe, so should I go for sectors in Europe which my current investments aren't in, for diversity?

If you are using funds then you should go with sector allocation (shares would be asset allocation - type of industry).

    The major sectors are:

    Cash
    Fixed interest
    International fixed interest
    property
    UK equity
    Europe
    US
    Far East
    Japan
    Emerging Markets
    Specialist.

Within those you can fine tune and diversify further. For example specialist could be Blackrock gold and general or Jupiter Financial options. Both very different funds but within the same sector. UK Equity could be equity income, value, small cap, large cap etc.
