Well, I can answer at least number 5 for you - for TVs, go to Repo TV. They sell reconditioned ex-rental TVs and also do repairs. Despite the fact that the whole place lives under a blue fug of cig smoke, I'd always go there to get a TV. They offer at least 6 month guarantees on them, and in the past 20 years we've had about 4 off them and they've always lasted for years rather than months. In fact we usually got fed up with the tellies before they broke... http://www.repotv.com/

I note that they've started doing white goods too. Can't comment on that, but for TVs they're definitely worth a look. Welcome to Manchester - provided you don't express a preference for football teams (or paint your house blue or red) then you'll get on just fine with the locals!

    Hi Matt

    Welcome to manchester

For food shopping, the cheapest is definitely Aldi - there is one in rusholme (curry mile) and one in didsbury. If you've never been to one before, they sell entirely own-brand stuff extremely cheaply, some is good, some not so good. Just experiment and see what you like.

If you are a student, the armitage centre in fallowfield has a nice gym for £135 a year - by far the cheapest anywhere.

An extremely cheap and fun friday night out is to go and watch sale sharks at edgerly park in stockport. Tickets from sale sharks website ;-)

    1. There are lots of hairdresser academys in manchester for models - £5 haircuts from wella for a start.
    2. dentists - you'll be lucky to find one registering. Try the nhs website for ones that are meant to be but when you turn up they're usually not.
    3. doctors - I really recommend the university practice in rusholme - robert derbishire. It's in rusholme medical centre.
    4. Food - lidl! There's on on oxford road underneath wilmslow park halls. Much better than aldi and cheaper.
    5. ??
    6. dry cleaners - I need one too. apparently there's an online place based in manchester which collect for you and they had a voucher for money off first order. might be worth a google for.
    7. gym - if you're a student either armitage or aquatics centre.. other than that I don't know.
    8. anything else?

withington - battered cod is a good chippy - I prefer it to the fallowfield one on ladybarn lane.

theres a good doctors opposite mcdonalds in wilmslow road, fallowfield (a big old house)my husband used to go there it was were Dr Chris Steel off Richard and Judy practised (dont know if hes still there as we havent been students for over a decade!!!!!!!)
dentists! be careful i would say carry on going to the one you know at home at parents every 6 mth unless you have emergency and the dental hospital behind oxford road and the precinct will sort that one out ive been there they are lovely!it is just that i had a bad experience in Fallowfield at a dentist on wilmslw road, it seemed to be different dentists everytime fresh out of college perhaps i ended up with lots of leaking fillings and had to have them ALL done again at my old dentst in bolton, one day i went past and there was a note on it had closed!!!!! never found out why but judging from the work in my mouth it is a good job it closed or was closed down!!!!one girl there tried to get me to have all veneers done so glad i didnt!!!she couldnt even do a decent filing! good luck!! fallowfield is great youll love it there!!
  • looking for white goods? if you can handle the journey then head up to ck electricals on harvey street in bury. its a very low key looking place but they absolutely paste the opposition when it comes to prices. we got a cooker for just over £300 from there, the nearest we could find anywhere else was about £500. Apparently there was a scratch on the side (so classed as damaged), i say apparently cos it was so small it was invisible once fitted.

also worth a trip is richer sounds in the centre of prestwich. they are always worth a visit if you are looking for electrical stuff (although the majority is high end).

both these places are in north manchester (my part of the world)
things arent the way they were before, you wouldnt even recognise me anymore- not that you knew me back then ;)
BH is my best mate too, its ok :)

I trust BH even if he's from Manchester.. ;)

There's an NHS dentist in the middle of the university area on oxford road (180 Oxford Road, his name is Ian Hancock). They accepted me as a new patient about a year ago - worth trying to see if they still are. I tried somewhere in Chorlton that was private because I hadn't found anywhere accepting nhs patients, and they quoted me work for over £300 that a second opinion told me was unecessary!

there's a vida gym at whalley range high school that seemed good value when they were last advertising - the prices don't seem to be on their website but i think it was £20-£25 a month for gym use, including any classes. (http://www.vida.co.uk/)

  • There is a new Dentist in Prestwich on Bury Old Road called the Smile Centre and they have loads of vacancies. NHS too!

6)Dry cleaners - Mr Bubbles in Fallowfield
4)Grocery shopping - Lidl and the Asian grocery stores in Rusholme (I used to shop at Fine Foods Superstore when I lived in Rusholme - excellent veg)
7)I think you can use the gym at the Armitage and Sugden centres (definitely the Sugden) if you are not a student but you have to pay more. (Unless you work for the NHS in which case you get a discount too) There are quite a few gyms in Manchester. I had a flatmate years ago who went to the one under Olive, the delicatessen on the corner of Sackville and Whitworth St. I think they were quite happy with it, I couldn't offer much of an opinion though. The gym is not my thing - I find repetitive exercise boring, that's why I'm a trampolinist.
