Is it wireless broadband you have at the moment, or does your desktop PC connect to the broadband modem using a cable?
If it is wired currently. Ring virgin, say you'd like to change to wireless and they'll send you everything you need, including a CD which does all the technical stuff for you. Then when you buy a laptop, just run the same CD on there and it will set the wireless connection up for you too. It's really easy to setup, they create these setup CD for non techie people like yourself which explain each step.0 -
I think Virgin charge around £40 for the wireless router, not sure if the internet charges go up?
I need to do this too but moving house at the moment.Just because you made a mistake doesn't mean you are a mistake.0 -
I am like MrsTittlemouse and also with Virgin and planning to get a laptop.
I just rang Virgin Media (150 Free call) Spoke to a nice guy who told me that Virgin charge £40. He advised me to get a wireless router from PC World/ Currys etc.
He said I would want DSL not ASDL.
Hope this helps.0 -
You need to buy a wireless router compatible with the Virgin Media modem. You can then just plug the wireless router into your Virgin Meida modem using the network (Ethernet) cable and setup your laptops wireless connection.
You need to be careful which router you buy as mentioned above, some are for ADSL and others for cable. I will get some links for you and post back.0 -

List of all routers compatible with your Virgin service above.
Router I have (I am with VM)

Its not the cheapest in the list, but its very good, stable and has good range.

You can get someone out to do if for you if you're a bit wary of getting it right re passwords etc. Not used them, as I haven't got my laptop yet, but when I was nosing in comet they said they'd send someone out for £40, to make sure the laptop and desktop were all up and running ok. (Usually more, I think, it was one of those "sign up now and we'll do it cheap" deals.)
It's probably fairly straightforward, i'm just a bit paranoid about someone sitting outside the house hacking in. (Can you tell I'm non-techie as well?)All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
Check Yell for a local PC technician. £40 sounds a bit steep. I run my own business doing that sort of thing and would say around £20 - £30 is more than enough if you have already bought all the equipment.
@elsien
Not a dig at you paying more btw, just a warning that these larger stores tend to overcharge. Something for you to bear in mind in the future0
