Offer of permanent job withdrawn today - due to start tomorrow

as above really. I quit my temporary job on friday when the offer was made (and i accepted) and was due to start a new job tomorrow morning. Have been filling all the forms out this morning and signed my contract to take in with me.

Had a call an hour ago to say really sorry, circumstances have changed and we have to withdraw the offer.

dont know what to do now.... am i entitled to anything? I need a job and chances of getting any temporary work for this week now are minimal

gutted for you, am doing exactly the same this week, ending a temp job to go permanent, wouldnt know what id do if that happened to me. hope you find something soon
  • Depends.

If the offer was made unconditionally - yes.

If the offer was made subject to references or passing a health exam - (and you didn't pass) No.

If it was unconditional then they owe you pay in lieu of notice.

The notice period would be one week's pay.

Unless the reason they withdrew the offer was because they think you are disabled/ asian/ gay/ pregnant, etc..., then it gets more complicated.

    A bit pessimistic!

It happens unfortunately. My workplace had to withdraw 30 offers 3 days before the start date because the powers that be decided to put the workstream into a different office (the offers were made to temps, but I'm just illustrating the fact that this can happen)

Really hope you find a job quickly, OP.

What happens if an employer withdraws a job offer?

Once you've accepted an unconditional offer, and the prospective employer withdraws it, you can claim for compensation for breach of contract
