Yes, lucky I saw this thread early! I should be able to keep up with it.
Sadly the prices mean nothing to me, being in New Zealand, but I can convert into my own $s. Except my food budget for a month is bout
£40 (is that the pound symbol? haha converted using banks calculator), so I could get it down further :P. Maybe I would just go for $1.50NZ a day, which equates I think.
Anyway, think I will enjoy reading :P Good luck. :T"Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without!!"Nov NSD: ?/30 Nov Make 10 Day ?/300Get Rid Of Debt: ?/2000 !! :mad:0 -

Applemella, Is this a tried and tested recipe please. also what diameter and depth is the tin, sorry to ask 'odd' question, but we're in Spain, so only baked bean tins we get are the tall ones and can't get sponge pudding here either. OH loves Xmas cake but I'm not a fan, but a small one would be ideal0 -
oh what a fantastic thread. I didn`t follow the other thread but will go through a post at a time as well as this one. So inspiring and good natured. I`ll be getting my trusty notebook out and have a few sharpened pencils handy. I have already seen recipes and hints I want to get down on paper.
I had a quick look yesterday, I don`t know which thread and made broad bean pod soup for the first time in my life. Oh why didn`t I ever think of it before? It takes someone like weezl to lead by example. Pat on the back young lady0 -
Morning weezlites!! Lovely to see that we've now gone inernational!! CW do you have a linky to the craft thread? Def be interested as trying to think ahead to making homemade things for Christmas to flog...I was partly responsible for pudding posts but wont be anymore as on slimming world due to excess of yummy buttery cakes!
Weezl my beautiful geekette could you work out how much Sw (with syns if necc) value is in the yummy pot bread recipe I posted! I am missing bread (as can only really have a morsel without going into syns which I like to save for "baughty" things!) but wondered whether pot would actually be better on sw as pots are generally free and with less flour than "normal" bread thought maybe I could have more...have also lots a loaf of bread! Dont know how but it sure is gone! Must have eaten it in my sleep!
Plus for those who, like me, live in large multi cultural cities I would def reccoment finsing our local asian/chinese supermarket as much is cheaper like dried mushrooms, large prawns (bag for 1.79 - nearly wet myself!!), spices, flours, rice etc...def worth a look plus lovely to venture out of comfort zone & find new thing!Nerd no 109 Long haulers supporters DFW #1! ISOM - have PM'd you the info on the craft sites I use.Cheryl0

Morning all!
sour apple bhaji- adapted from cooking apple bhaji
250g cooking apples/sour early windfalls I just took off the tiniest amount of stalk and halved them, didn't bother about coring them, their cores had barely formed!
2x 440g cans plum toms chopped
100g sugar you could start with less if your apples are less sour than mine were!
1 tspn cumin
2 cloves garlic
1 tspn salt
1/2 tspn chilli powder
teaspoon cinnamon
500g onions chopped
60ml cooking oil
fry the spices and chopped garlic in the oil for a minute to release the flavour, add the onions and fry them 'til slightly translucent.
I microwaved the apples in the sugar and a little water separately, so I could keep checking how they were for sourness before adding them, but you don't have to do this.;)
add the tomatoes, chopped in their can and apple mixture once it's sweet enough, or just the apples and sugar if you prefer not to microwave it first.
Simmer the curry for 20ish mins, taste and adjust sweetness/ saltiness.:D
enjoy with rice and kalonji bread/naan.:T
made 10 portions, 10p per serving :money:15p for dinner with 50g rice and a naan:T:T
backin a bit to catch up on what you've all said...

Hello all
Just wanted to say how good this thread has been to read. I've just bought my first house with my b/f so have been hunting round for good quality recipes which don't break the bank for when we move in. First time not having mum or dad cook for me (except when I lived abroad for a while and even then I survived).
Thanks to all those who post recipes - like an earlier poster I have saved tons to a Word document. Plus that Indian curry website - natco (looks fab).
I'll keep following with avid interest. :THow long til pay day?

Hi...here's the Crafty for Crimbo thread http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=968525
And another is

Have a nosey on the Special Occasions board for all sorts of ideas for :money: gift ideas; there's a couple for hampers & another two at least for making things like nappy cakes & flannel cup cakes....all in a similar vein to our Weezl's foodie challenge.
Sorry about going OT, but origionally posted about the individual cakes as a way of stretching the food budget a little further.....ooh, maybe making individual rice puds or summat, for the freezer! Would that work, as in batch cooking as per, but using the empty tins to freeze portions for another time?
Oo-oo-oo...I'm on a roll here! Batch up a vanilla sponge pud, but you can put different sauces in the bottom like syrup, jam, fruit puree etc so you have a variety of puds:T
Someone was asking about increasing their 5-a-day....you could always put some dried fruit in the recipe for the crispie cake, flapjack, etc.
About the humble taiter being excluded from the 5-a-day list...I think I recall reading that, because it is used primarily as the starch component of a meal, it wouldn't be included in the f&v count too.Full time Carer for Mum; harassed mother of three;loving & loved by two 4-legged babies.
