    It's not a penalty on interest. It is a penalty for closing early and simply calculated in relation to the interest rate.

    The Nationwide website appears to have been down since yesterday afternoon, anyway - so no one can open an e-bond at the moment

    Not for me it hasn't - did an account transfer at about 7am this morning fine.

    Web access still fine now - must be you!

    More info - Trace route and ping both return "destination net unreachable" but access to www.nationwide.co.uk and log into banking is fine.
