Moving house come 1st July - Advise Needed

Good Afternoon

I am moving into a two bedroomed flat on the 1st July. We have no idea what companies the current occupier is using and not sure what to do/ whether we can do anything with regards to changing suppliers until we actually move into the flat.

Can anyone offer any tips or advise please?

Thanks.

You can only switch suppliers when you actually have one. When you know who the current supplier is, check out the comparison sites in the resource bar at the top.

The easiest way is to try and establish who the current suppliers from either the estate agent/letting agent/landlord (as applicable) or best way is from the current occupiers.

You'll need to accept whoever the current suppliers are when you move in as nothing will be done until your name is on the account. Once your name is on the account, you could look to switch, but this takes about 4-6 weeks and you'll want power from the moment you move in, so accept the supplies from the current suppliers until then.

Actually, as you'll probably have no idea what your consumption figures will be, it's probably best to stay with the current suppliers for a while and see how things work out, unless you have any great reason to leave, else you could be jumping out of the proverbial frying pan if you switch.

See if you can find out who the supplier is before you move, and give them a call in the week before.
If the flat has prepayment meters, it might avoid you having to wait to get the electricity/gas on.
As to switching, you have a cooling off period, so one or two weeks before you move in could be the time to begin the switch.
  • Thanks alot all.

I think I'll wait until I move into the house and sort everything out then. Only thing I'm going to be without is the internet!

That's another minefield. This site here will tell you what is available on your local exchange e.g. LLU operators etc.
