post now, any tips or recipes!

I've worked out that chocolate concrete is 9p a serving, can anyone beat that? Please make it as energy dense (calorific) as you can for as little money. Short of munching on a block of lard, he's pretty flexible.:o

    Please give generously. Thank you.:A

  • Ok, I'll try to be sympathetic to skinny Mr Weezl - skinny is not a problem I have, and I swear I could eat cardboard for a month and still not be afflicted... anyway, lovely fat is what he needs- how about bread and butter pudding, jam roly poly (the name says it all....) with custard or cream or a dollop of your hm icecream. The coconut topped jam tarts (last mths gc I think) worked out cheap - the downside being that a trayful disappeared before they were even cool.

    Hi Weezl,

Great thread and lots to think about thank you!

Here's a recipe for my chocolate cupcakes, but you're on such a tight budget they may be too expensive for you! They can be frozen without the icing, would also make a nice pudding without icing if heated for a few seconds in the microwave and served with custard or icecream. Yum!

    CHOCOLATE CHUNK CUPCAKES

    125g margarine £0.13 (Stork 500g £0.50)
    125g caster sugar £0.10 (Caster Sugar 1kg £0.77)
    25g cocoa powder £0.13 (Tesco Cocoa 250g £1.24)
2 eggs £0.42 (Tesco Free Range Eggs Medium Box Of 6 £1.28)
175g self raising flour £0.06 (Tesco Value Self Raising Flour 1.5kg £0.45)
    1tsp baking powder £0.01 (Tesco Baking Powder 170g £0.37)
    100g plain choc
(cut into ½ cm chunks) £0.28 (Tesco Value Plain Chocolate 100g £0.28)

    For the icing
    40g butter softened £0.14 (Tesco Value Butter 250g £0.85)
    125g icing sugar £0.12 (Miscellaneous Icing Sugar 1kg £0.91)
    20g cocoa powder £0.10 (Tesco Cocoa 250g £1.24)

TOTAL £1.49 12.5 pence each (cheaper without icing)

Preheat the oven to 180 degrees. Put 12 paper cake cases into a cake/muffin tray.

Cream together the margarine and caster sugar. Then add the cocoa and eggs and whisk again. Fold in the flour, add the chocolate chunks and mix thoroughly. Spoon the mix into the paper cake cases and then bake for 15 - 20 minutes.

For the icing, sift together the icing sugar and second lot of cocoa powder. Beat together with the softened butter and a tablespoon of warm water until soft and fluffy. Using a teaspoon swirl on to the top of the cakes to decorate.:j

Let me know what your budget is for pudding per person and I'll see if any of my recipes fit. Maybe rice pudding would be a cheap dish to bung in the oven when you're baking something else?

Oh and what is chocolate concrete? Sounds like something my OH would get on very well with!

Since we've been cutting the budget I've found I've put on weight with all the carbs I've been eating. It's all the baking I've been doing:o Trying to cut back, but find it really hard to cook them with the aim of filling OH up cheaply, and then not also eat them myself!

Poor Mr Weezl! Sorry I can't help with the recipes as we don't really make puddings and I've not got to the costing each recipe stage yet (see, still have a long way to go) but I hope the recipes offered help.
Thanks for the turkish inspiration too Softstuff.

  • Busy Day Pudding
    Serves 4
    Prep time 15-20 mins
    Cooking time 30 mins

    6oz/150g SR Flour
    3 level tbs cornflour
    1 level tsp salt
    1oz/25g margarine
    ¼ / 150ml milk

    Sauce
    2oz/50g marg
    6 tbs golden syrup
    4 tbs water

Lightly grease a 1pint pudding basin. Sift the flour, cornflour and salt into a mixing bowl. Melt the margarine in a saucepan, add the milk, and then stir into the dry ingredients. Turn the mixture into the prepared pudding basin.
Make the sauce: Heat all the ingredients together in a saucepan, stirring continuously until the margarine has melted and the sauce is boiling. Pour the sauce over the pudding mixture in the basin, leave it uncovered and place it in a saucepan with water to come halfway up the sides of the basin. Put the lid on the pan and boil steadily for about 30 minutes or until cooked. Turn the pudding out of the basin onto a hot plate and serve.

By my calculations when I last made this pudding it cost 41p to make and was 400 calories for 1/4, so if Mr Weezl can manage 1/2 of it in one sitting he would consume 800 calories. We like it with custard and icecream.

  • I went to my first farmer's market this morning and bought 8 large sardines (they weigh 750g in total) for £1.60.

That seemed like a good price to me, 20p per fish???

Guess what we're having for tea?

I think we'll have the Syrup Sponge Pud (busy day pud) for dessert and we will be nicely stuffed :rotfl: . Less than £3 for a family of 4.
