Dead Gas Fire/Yorkstone Surround

The knob on the side of the 70's/80s gas fire has sheared away from the valve. We've been quoted £300-400 for a replacement part
Updating the firesurround will improve the resale - Is it a big job pulling out a Yorkstone (chimney breast of a terrace) or should i just look at finding something that doesn't look like it needs a Tardis to feel at home?
I've never had to consider renovating fires before, I've no idea where to start, or what budget to consider "Normal" if there is such a thing.
