How do I get out of crap jobs
thunderballs
At school I had a nervous breakdown and only finished a handful of GCSEs meaning it became impossible to get into a worthwhile college or university. Because of this I can not find a worthwhile decent paying job.
All that seems to be on offer are bottom rug, lowest of the low jobs where you are treated like an idiot. It seems to be expected of me to work these jobs in my 20s, 30s and 40s. You're not allowed to talk out of turn or to think for yourself and the only thing the management care about is crushing the life out of you.
Maybe I can go back to education where they treat you like an idiot. Or find another job to get treated like an idiot. Or maybe just go to the jobcentre and get treated like an idiot. People call me hardworking and clever and social but nobody's interested in my potential or my ability and I'm sick of underachieving in jobs where you are treated like an idiot.
The real question is not "what I want", but what am I allowed to want? I have the experience, the discipline, the work ethic and people know it. So what do I have to do to get people to take me seriously and get out of crap jobs?

You seem to have an ego issue.
You said you have no eduction (that a 16 year old fresh out of secondary school doesn't have) but you instantly dismiss further education (the ONLY realistic way out of your situation).
If you want something, you will have to work for it, put ego aside and just get it done, then one day you can treat others like idiots.0 -

You seem to have an assumption issue.
I tried higher education several times. In the real world, it doesn't work. You're probably one of these people that thinks throwing money at the situation works because someone bought everything for you. The way you talk proves you don't get it.
Also I have no desire to treat anyone else like as an idiot. That's an offensive thing to assume of me. But you don't have to care, because you probably come from some cosy out of touch middle class family where you got spoonfed your career and will never realise it.0 -
Furthermore let's analyse your reply further since it's so snarky and hostile and full of itself.xapprenticex wrote: »You seem to have an ego issue.

You call me egotistical. Being frustrated and disappointed isn't egotistical. If anything, getting tired and fed up of situations was elemental to overcoming them. People start acting a lot differently when you really show you've had enough.
Working hard doesn't prove that you're going the right way, either. I've been laid off twice and fired once due to circumstances completely out of my control. No one wanted to listen or hear about it.
And the assumption that it's my interest to subvert the situation and take cheap vengeance back is really offensive to me. But you're the problem, and you specifically. There's just no motivation for you to improve your attitude. Why should you? You've got yours - everyone else can sink for all you care.0 -
Simple question
With your hatred of the jobs you can get, who do you think is lining up to employ you?
Which is a sign you should go self employed.
I believe you either decide to take control, or you remain a victim. Currently your langusage is that of a victim.2021 GC £1365.71/ £24000 -

What jobs have you done and what would you like to do? As you get older education becomes less important but experience becomes your career driver. I'm now 44 and would stunned if education was ever mentioned in an interview I went for, although I would love to talk about the historical implications of the repeal of the corn laws rather than what I can do with Excel.0 -
I'm not going to reply if it means having my head bitten off.0

So why are you "underachieving"?
You can be paid a lot of money and have no clue what you are doing - it isn't a worthwhile feeling.0 -
I had the problem of dead end low paid jobs, some with horrible managers, some with lovely ones. I got out of it by going to university.
I have GCSE's and a college BTEC certificate but that wasn't at all related to my degree choice. I found my way into brick uni was to do some Open University first to get a few modules that are relevant under my belt. This shows I'm interested in the topic and that I can manage higher education as a mature student.
You need to look at alternative routes of education. You cannot keep blaming your break down in school as the reason for everything that has happened since. There are plenty of jobs that start you at the bottom but then you work your way up.0 -

Quoting for posterity. Given the (over)reaction to the first reply I'm going to follow George Carlin's advice with the exception of pointing out a common theme.Originally Posted by shortcrust
