Car in laws buying us a run around

My husband currently has a pcp agreemant in his name however im not going back to work now from maternity leave and its no longer financially viable for us to keep the pcp going and we want to hand it back. the shortfall would be 4K added to my husbands other debts BR is the way forward for him
my inlaws have offered to buy us a car for approx £2k and have said they dont want it logged as a loan, it will be deducted from his inheritance as and when the time comes.
am i correct in thinking we can be the registered keepers without being the owners?
i was made BR in october so i am 7m into my BR could i be the owner or would it affect my BR?
TIA
