Claimin tax rebate from HMRC

Hello Forumites,
I've discovered that I've been overpaying tax since 2007!
HMRC can and have sent me a rebate for the last 4 years, after I chased them, but they say they can't go back any further than this. They owe me around the £400 mark, which won't change the world, but its a fair amount of money to me, And its MY money that they have taken incorrectly. I have all the paperwork from my employer to show this from my P60.
They are saying they can't go back beyond 2012 now but surely if I'd underpaid they'd expect me to pay them!
Has anyone has any joy in following this up and making a successful claim?
As I see it, they are the tax experts, not me, and they've taken money from me incorrectly and now won't pay it back.
Look forward to your replies,
H.

Annual tax statement.
But my P60 and monthly pay slips had no mention of any additional benefits, in this case, private medical care, so I assumed, now wrongly, that these documents were correct,.0
