Has it ever been suggested/has there ever been an open chat room on MSE?
Somewhere that is a free for all, open and not monitored.
If not why not?
I think it would be a good idea as a lot of threads turn to chats/banter and when this happens they are closed

I suppose it is the most open thread on the forum, by that I mean folks chatting about things not always comping related, but it is still a thread not a chat room.

Chat room would be good But I suspect there would be so many people, it would descend into chaos...
Chatting on a forum just isn't the same. You want to be able to actually converse like with a chat room. It always favours the fast typists though so I suspect a lot will quickly get fed up with it.

It would be too open to abuse / talk about other forum users / advertising etc ... and I doubt Martin would want this associated with his site / brand.0

It would have to monitored for legal reasons and having observed some of the abuse posted on this monitored forum - and how long it takes to be removed - an unmonitored chat room would be a legal nightmare waiting to happen.
Chats which turn to banter are not removed.
Chats which turn to hostility and bullying are - eventually.0 -
