Council Tax

Hi, Had a very emotional Mum on phone to me this morning. Cambridge District Council have taken £270 out for Council Tax this month, instead of the expected £110.
Mum is 80, and living of her pension, so you can understand her concern.
She spoke with council this morning, who advised that following a review she has underpaid for the last 3 years, and they have taken the underpayment out this month.
Mum did say she had a letter but not understand it, and her statement/yearly bill, said they would take out £110 as normal.
If Mum did underpay she is happy to pay this back over time but not in one sum, but as she paid exactly what the Council requested each month via Direct Debit, she honestly did not know, and no one has contacted her in the 3 years.
Is there anything my Mum can do, is it worth me trying to call them to discuss.

Legally, for previous years the money is due in one lump sum.Mum did say she had a letter but not understand it, and her statement/yearly bill, said they would take out £110 as normal.
There should have been a revised demand notice issue at least 14 days prior to the payment being taken. Is there anything my Mum can do, is it worth me trying to call them to discuss.
Nothing to stop you trying.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -
Thanks for the response, the outstanding has been paid, and I have put extra into her bank to cover other bills and food, but I have to say a little annoyed that it took 3 years to notice.
Mum has always made sure she has paid what they asked, she gets no discount on her Council Tax, so I am surprised that she underpaid.Wins: £400 (Win O’Clock)0 -
Ring bank and get them to reverse the payment as per direct debit guarantee.:footie:
Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.
