Poor credit, where to look for remortgage?

I have my current mortgage off the high street and im paying over the top in interest. The sensible thing seems to be to remortgage, again off the highstreet due to poor credit (been a student, gone thru a separation, now working full time in a decent job and have spent some years working on my credit rating).
My question is really where to look? Use a broker or not?

What is the poor credit? CCJ's? Defaults? Missed payments? IVA/Bankruptcy? If so when did they occur?

My property is worth about 100K and my current mortgage is on an interest only at present with a total of 64k. Current mortgage rate is 6%!!!!!!0 -
How much was the December default for? Who registered it?
6% for a poor credit mortgage is not really over the top. May
