What was conceived as a club for Europe’s strongest economies was expanded for political reasons, leaving the currency union with minimal powers to police deficit spending and no safety net for dealing with countries, like Greece, that veer toward default.

FWIW, I think that the Germans apologising for the horrible things that happened during WW2 are long gone. Germany is well within it's rights to flip the Bird to the rest of Europe and to insist on fiscal probity.0

i think Germany should leave the Euro they would be better of with out it0

I agree. But the strength of the deuchmark wouldnt help its manufacturing based economy.
I think they are saying one thing and intending another. A lot of this will be political posturing to placate the Conservative electorate.0 -
There has been qutie a lot written about Merkel actually wanting a weak Euro as this will encourage German exports.0
