My friend has just text me- she has been informed that a gym she joined in 2006 and left about 4 months later are still taking the payment from her each month of about £27. She rang and they said "we'll owe you some money then" and they want her to put it in writing about joining and cancelling. She wants me to help her write it- I was wondering whether she should say the amount she is expecting as a refund as I'm not sure whether they'll pay her all/any of it cos she is partly to blame for not checking her statements surely?
Thanks for any help you can offer.

I think you need more information and she should not write a letter to cancel membership, rather she should be writing a letter of complaint to the head office.
What is the proper procedure for cancelling membership as per the contract?
Was this procedure followed or did she just cancel over the phone?
Did she ever receive any correspondence confirming the cancellation? After falling off the gambling wagon (twice): £33,600 (24,000+ 9,600) - Original CC Debt: £7,885.91

            Thanks for replying.
I am not sure if it was a 12 month contract.
She went into the gym and spoke to someone re cancelling. I don't think she received any confirmation but had no reason to not believe it wouldn't happen.
Should she not bother with the letter re cancelling and write to Head Office instead then?Married my wonderful husband February 2013!:happyhearI want to wear my beautiful wedding dress everyday- it would make shopping so much more fun, I mean, people go shopping in their pyjamas these days.......Must STOP spending!!! She should write to the head office to say that she cancelled her membership x years ago - as she doesn't have any knd of proof though, i'm not sure what else she can do.
If she was told to write in to cancel her membership, that would be like her saying that she hadn't tried to cancel all that time ago. After falling off the gambling wagon (twice): £33,600 (24,000+ 9,600) - Original CC Debt: £7,885.91

Gym membership is a pain to cancel, you need to check the terms of the contract.
Usually it is always required in writing, it is usually required that you give between 1-3 months notice, and if you do not give notice they renew you on either a 1,3,6,12 month contract automatically.Although no trees were harmed during the creation of this post, a large number of electrons were greatly inconvenienced.
