Tax Refund while on a Leave of Absence

Does anyone know if I will be able to claim a refund of tax paid when I go on an unpaid leave of absence from October this year? Will I have to wait until next April to apply for it?

I've been paying tax cumulatively as normal, so obviously I will be overpaid as I won't be earning for the last six months of the tax year, I'm staying on the payroll so I won't receive a P45 and, after checking the HMRC website, I can't find any guidance.

I'm going away travelling and my saving hasn't been going too well, so it would be nice to unlock a few hundred pounds to use on my trip!

If you're staying on the payroll, your employer should be able to seek approval from HMRC that they can process a repayment for you through the November pay run.

However, I can understand any hesitance here from both your employers' and HMRC's side about an upfront in-year repayment. It will probably depend on your circumstances. For instance, if (for any reason) you had to return to work early and you'd already received a repayment for the year, you'd owe a huge payment back to the tax man.

Jimmo - I actually thought of that today! I'll contact my payroll section in the morning to see how it will be handled!
