Tax Rebate?

in Cutting tax
Hi guys,
I started a new job in Jan, after a long period of unemployment. My tax code is 603L, however I have been taxed since Jan. Is this right, as I have not used my personal allowance? If this is wrong, would I get a rebate in April or May/
Basic questions, I know, but any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

this is an emergency coding used by employers till they have notification of the correct number to use to calculate your tax.
when you receive your P60 in April [ from your employer]write to your tax office and explain and they should refund any tax owed back from Jan - beginning of April
eventually you will receive a notification from tax office which shows your tax number which should end up showing on your pay slips each month.0 -

Well it rather depends, ...
when you started work in Jan did you hand in a P45? or did you fill in a P46
A code of 603L (without anything letters after it like wk1 or mth1) is a normal code and should in principle mean you were being taxed properly.
However, if you wish to post up all your figures from your March payslip we could check whether you are paying too much.
And can you say what happened between april 2008 and Jan 20090 -
Just to add further to what has already been said..
Unless you are in receipt of any employer benefits/expenses, the tax code that has been operated is correct and entitled you to earn c£593 p/m before you pay tax.
Strictly, if you have earned less than the personal allowance of £6035 between January and the end of the tax year, you should submit your P60 to HMRC and request that they make an assessment/issue you with a repayment.
This doesn't however take into account any job seekers allowance that you may have been in receipt of (at any point) between 6 April 2008 and the time you started your job. If you claimed JSA, the amounts you claimed will be taken into consideration when assessing your total income for the year. (ie if your Jan to March earnings PLUS your JSA are more than £6035, you would not be entitled to a repayment).
Hope this helps0
