How to book the cheapest train fare - not by date

All I want to do is a ticketsearch for the cheapest fare Perth to Edinburgh returning on the same day. I can go anytime, any date. I have tried thetrainline, nationalrailenquiries, scotrail, trainpal, omio and googled "skyscanner for trains" but every time you have to put your date of travel. The great advantage of skyscanner is it shows you the cheapest fares. In the depths of the Scotrail website there is a 5 day view but obviously all cheap tickets have gone. I don't want to search date by date, adding in the time each time for weeks to find a cheap advance fare. Is this impossible, or am I missing something simple?

You can find the full range of fares on brfares.com. What that doesn’t tell you is whether the specific fare is available for the date you wish to travel.0

That's interesting, thanks. Halfway to what I want to find!0

You can do the journey for £15.90 if you take the once per day LNER trains; on weekdays this is usually 10:05 from Perth and 16:34 from Edinburgh0
