Reclaim council tax on flat I'm about to move out of

I'm about to move out of my rented flat, but I've recently realised the council tax band might be too high. This is based on looking at similar properties in the area, which are much nicer and yet in the same band or just one higher.

If I get the ball rolling now, I'll probably have moved out by the time the appeal is considered. Is that OK, or will it cause problems?

When did you move in to the flat ?
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

As there are only 8 CT bands, there will be many different dwellings in the same band, so your band is probably correct. You are well out of time to make a formal appeal and if you asked for a band review, it will be dismissed out of hand as you have no good reason or evidence to support your request. The new tenant would be able to make a formal appeal, so i you feel the band is to high, you should contact them and suggest they make an appeal. If they are successful, you would be refunded any overpayment of CT
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales
