Purple Book 2019

The Purple Book 2019 was published today by the Pension Protection Fund.

This is the definitive data source on private sector Defined Benefit pension schemes.

A few key/interesting points I noted:
  • Total DB pension scheme assets of over £1.6 trillion (this does not include LGPS)
  • A continuation of the switch in funding away from equities and toward bonds and hedge funds
  • A shortfall of almost £500bn to fully buy-out all schemes
  • A 14% decline in active membership since 2018, although there are still over 1 million active members accruing Defined Benefit pension in the private sector.
  • Almost 600,000 active private sector members of Defined Benefit schemes that are still open to new joiners
  • 70% of the pension of members receiving PPF compensation are pre 1997 accruals, so donot receive increases. For deferred members it is 43%

Thanks for highlighting such an interesting booklet!

I am somewhat surprised that there are still that many active members still accruing the Defined Benefit pensions, more so that some schemes are open to new joiners!
