What you believe is irrelevant. "Paying into the system" is not a savings scheme. It's an obligation. As is looking for employment when you claim out of work benefits. You might like it to be otherwise, but it isn't.My left wing political views obviously not popular with the many Daily Mail readers brigade on here, believe that if you have been paying into the system for a number of years then everyone should be able to claim 6 months JSA hassle free. I don't feel you should be forced to jump through hoops to get £71.00 a week. You should pay your NI contributions for insurance against unemployment as well as going towards your pension. Why attack them over concerns about benefit fraud? Is it a money issue your worried about because more money is paid to claimants from admin errors on overpayment, never recovered by the way, then claimed committing benefit fraud.
BTW - you are so not on the left wing! I regret to inform you that "the left" consider that benefits are a necessary protection for people who have no other alternative until they regain employment. Lounging around choosing not to work is so not left wing it isn't even on the field. If you had even a basic comprehension of the political spectrum, you would know that the left wing believe that everyone should work for the common good, and that there should be jobs for everyone. Thinking that it's ok to be the lumpen proletariat is a capitalist idea - and that is what you constantly promote.0 -

Speaking as a paid-up member of the Far Left (I support Corbyn but he is far too moderate for my taste)... I so agree that everyone who works and pays into the system should have the right to a period of being supported by the community, and note that such support is called a pension.
Anyway: the regulations governing JSA (and Unemployment Benefit as it used to be called) have been clear from the foundation of the welfare state: it is an allowance to enable people to 'get by' while they are looking for work. I disagree with the present system since I favour a more liberal interpretation of the term 'looking for work' to include activities that enhance someone's employability as well as simply churning out CVs. For example: during Margaret Thatcher's reign I spent a year studying full-time for a Masters degree while receiving JSA, and was entirely honest about what I was doing. And yes: I was clever about reading the detail of the regulations and the words I used to describe what I was doing, but the system did have that level of flexibility, as it should.0 -

The whole concept of the welfare system post-Beveridge was founded upon the principle of full employment. It has never been sufficiently funded to allow people to use it for long sabbatical periods on on-work at other contributors' expense.0 -

Think most people out of work Would be offended by your sabbatical comment. We are talking about 6 months to find a job suitable for your skills. Not to be treated like carp everytime you go to the jobcentre and forced to apply for jobs which you are totally not suited for and face a sanction. I was out of work for a few months last year but from my experience I will never claim jSA again no matter how desperate I am for a job or money. Its not worth being treated like S**T for £71 a week0 -

I would take suitable employment yes. It’s going to be better paid than JSA, leave less of a gap to explain and I could still search for my preferred career0
