How long does it take for council tax for be reimbursed?

Options
Hi guys,

I have been overcharged by £60 this month in council tax by Nottinghamshire council.

I have emailed them after double checking my monthly direct debits and payment plan, requesting them to sort it out by the end of this week. After doing some research online, it seems they have up to 2 months to respond?!

I know its only £60 but due to upcoming plans, I have already been on a tight budget and this will set me off massively. I am so angry right now as it's more the uncertainty of being charged the same over the next 2 months and the cashflow issues due to other commitments in the meantime.

Could anyone please confirm if it really does take upto 2 months to receive a refund or even have a response? Is there any way I could speed up the process :(

Many thanks,

JB

I think you would be better off contacting an officer of Nottinghamshire Council.

The only statutory 2 month period is valuation tribunal appeals, other than that any query is as long as the council take.

You need to speak with the council as it's unusual for a direct debit to be overtaken as the systems are written only to take monies where there is not a nil balance but only they can tell you exactly what has happened.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
  • Thanks! I will try to speak to someone in the council direct.
