HM Crisps

Options
Morning all!!

I've just been struck by a moment of genius - but I need your help :o

I LOVE to eat crisps - but as DH is in the nutrition business I get lectured at about how terrible they are for me (and when you read the ingredients list on my fav brands I have to agree there's some dodgy stuff in there). So... I just realised I can make home Made ones!! Trouble is... I dont know how :o

Has anybody ever made crisps before?? Can you tell me what i need to do? I figure I can slice the potatoes really thinly with the food processor, and flavour them with stuff like chilly infused olive oil (would that work??) but then I get stuck. How do you cook them? Sorry for being a numpty but having had one genius moment this morning my brain has now gone back to sleep!!

    Yep Definitely thank you.

I'd also like to look at oven baking them if possible, so if anyone has any info on how to do that I'd be really grateful.

We use the slicer on the grater, even a couple of potatoes goes a long way. We do use oil, but as they are so tasty (with good potatoes!) just salt and pepper is all you want for flavouring so although still high in fat they aren't full of rubbish, so it's a fair trade off - better to have a little of something gorgeous and wholesome than a lot of something unsatisfying and bad for you!

OH was writing a guide but didn't get around to it; some basic details at the link below, and appetising pics, but really all there is to it is slice finely, fry in sunflower oil, season.

Sweet smoked paprika is very nice to sprinkle on - I think flavouring the oil would be a bit awkward (you can reuse the potato oil if you don't put any flavouring in it).

Mmmmm they look yummy!! Thank you. I think I'm going to have to bite the bullet and go for the frying option - i know they wont absorb much oil if I get the temp high enough, so no need to feel too guilty. And they've GOT to be better than bought ones!! Cheaper too!!

I know that these are not really what you were asking for but to make Dorito style crisps:- Par boil some lasagne sheets, cut into triangles, place on an oiled baking sheet, sprinkle with garlic granules and italian seasoning, bake in a hot oven until they puff up, remove from oven and eat! Very tasty and save in a plastic bag at least a day if they last that long.

    Oh Wow!!!

What a shame that DH doesnt eat wheat - I'll have to eat these all by myself. :rotfl:

We've made crisps out of tortillas before - works better with the all corn ones anyway. You just make the tortillas as you would for dinner and then deep fry - we have only ever done it with left over tortillas so I don't know if you could fry the raw dough itself. Corn or maize meal is cheaper and easier to get from health food shops or even delis than it is from the supermarket.
