Paying missing NICs after claiming pension?

Can anyone confirm whether you can make a voluntary contribution after you have started receiving State Pension, assuming there's scope in your record for it? I hope to pay NICs for last year, but as I submitted my tax return on paper, HMRC won't process the return and resolve this before I'm eligible to receive a state pension.
