Charges for working as nhs pharmacy technician

Why do pharmacy technicians working for the nhs and already fully qualified have to pay the General Pharmaceutical Council £118 every year to do theyre job? Its a cost that has zero value , and is very recent. Can i reclaim these costs like you can for overalls etc in some jobs. Its an extremely unfair charge and is mandatory according to where i work in central belt of scotland. We already have pharmacists how monitor our production values and the council do not provide any direct support in the form of visits, indeed other than a yearly charge coming through my letterbox, i have had a costly few months and with 3 kids its the last thing i need!

Patients can have confidence that the individuals who appear on our registers are fully qualified and meet all our standards.

Relief is due to pharmacists and pharmacy technicians under s343 ITEPA 2003 for the entry or retention of a name in the Register of Pharmacists.

Compulsory registration

From 1 July 2011, pharmacy technicians must be registered with the GPhC to practise in England, Scotland and Wales. The register provides protection for patients by ensuring only those qualified, competent and under a duty to maintain high standards can work as pharmacy technicians in Great Britain. Those not registered, but practising as a pharmacy technician or referring to themselves as such, are breaking the law and can be prosecuted.

Like every other medical professional, pharmacists and pharmacy technicians must be registered with and answerable to a professional body.

To practice as a pharmacy technician whilst unregistered can cause serious problems for you and anyone who employs you.

Why do nurses, midwives etc all pay their yearly fee to the NMC in order to be able to work? Because unfortunately thats the rules, and while you can claim tax relief on them, the NHS won't pay them for you

You imply this register monitors the quality of a said individual, i see no mechanism in theyre process for entry in this register, how does the General Pharmaceutical Council monitor the quality of individuals applying for registration? What happens if a "twonk", whatever that is, applies for entry to the register?

Check the website, but I'm fairly sure you're meant to provide proof of continuing professional development.

I know other professions have random spot checks.

A random 'twonk' won't be able to apply to be registered with proof of qualification for a start.
