  • What strategies have you discovered yourself to either earn that extra £500 a month or reduce your outgoings?

Without carrying out open-heart surgery on your SOA yourself it's all guesswork from over here.

    £18 per day. £558 a month.

Heres how I'd do it. I'd do two double shift a week earning me an extra 14 hours at £6 per hour (old wage) which is +£84 per week or approx £336 a month. Factor in tax and any extra travel/food costs and it would wittle it down to £280 ish. Halfway there.

Maybe working overtime isn't an option for you. in which case what about a part time job one or two days a week?

    How about selling some stuff.

I used to sew and my sewing would usually earn me between £500 and £2000 extra a month. Obviously then it had to be declared but extra income for something you actually enjoy doing is fun.

I do love a challenge! It's a great idea to break it down to a weekly or daily amount to achieve your target.

My suggestions would be ebay (watch out for free listing weekends in particular), car boot sale, overtime if there is any available. Make some cut backs to your grocery shop (try the drop a brand challenge) - if you could save £15 a week on your groceries thats £60 towards your target. If you are a smoker try cutting back - help your health and your pocket :D.

  • I hate drinking water, but just by making sure I drink 1.5 lt a day whistI'm running around at work actually stops me putting money in the vendor for drinks but also I'm not as hungry, so less food is going into my packed lunch!!

Get yourself over to this challenge (there will be someone setting up next months fairly soon and a link will be posted).
I've found it amazingly motivational, and also have picked up extra ideas from what other people are doing.

Get your SOA up as well so everyone here can have a look and I'm sure there will be lots of ideas of where the fat can be trimmed so the savings can go towards your debt total :)

Thanks everyone, I realise i was a little vague starting this thread, was trying to entertain my 2 kids at the same time :o

will try and get my SOA done when the kids are in bed tonight,

My partner works and does on average 20-40 hours overtime a month already so think this is going to have to increase, he does 40 hrs a week basic. I don't work as I bring up the kids, a part time job isn't an option as my husbands work is very unpredictable (within an hours notice he needs to have a train booked to London etc, ends up staying for days sometimes, very difficult to plan things and he is on call 6am-10.30pm every day whether at work or weekend.

I have listed 5 things on eBay last night :T 1 already has a bid so that's good, couple of watchers too.

We've already sacked off the tv licence over a year ago, don't miss it either :)
Kids don't go to nursery, youngest is in reusable nappies, he is on formula so when he turns 1 in December I'll be putting him on cows milk which should reduce the cost of his milk (currently £42 a month) etc

We are rubbish with takeaway though when the kids have gone to bed, so yesterday I emailed all the companies and told them to deactivate our accounts :D should deter us a little bit.

My husband drinks water at work and will be taking a packed lunch from tomorrow.

Think we need to shop around for gas/elec, phone, Internet etc but not sure where to start :o

Setting up kids bank accounts today as determined for them to get off to a good start x
