I'd not sell it if it was me. I'd feel guilty forever.

Apart from the sentimental issues, be very careful if you decide to sell the ring. Unless it's a huge antique/important diamond etc., it's very common for jewellers and dealers to just offer the scrap price for pieces.
I took a few GOOD antique rings that I never wore into a 'reputable' jewellers a couple of years ago and they offered a pittance for them; I refused naturally - I'd rather have given them away.
I doubt you'd even get a decent price on Ebay - I've seen some lovely items of old jewellery go for peanuts."I'm ready for my close-up Mr. DeMille...."0 -

If you sell it otherwise, you won't get its true value ... and you may want to use it somedayde do-do-do, de dar-dar-dar0 -
I have my Nannas eternity ring, and it is the most important item I own. It could never be replaced. I would never ever sell it.

Wow! Thanks for all the replies.
Am still undecided. Clearly it means quite a lot to me, although I wouldn't wear it - the setting is very old-fashioned, and I'd have it re-set. I can see both sides of the argument, and if I'm going to go for a £500 old number with 3rd party F&T only insurance I think I would scrape all that money together somehow.
I think she would be of the opinion that it was to be used - whether that be by wearing or by selling. I just would rather if it came to where I had absolutely no alternative to selling it that the funds went to something other than a car - even if I'm getting very desperate now. Am just feeling majorly low at the minute, cabin fever has set in big time and I'm desperate for some freedom again...I feel like I can't breathe.
Will put the thoughts on hold for a week or so, then reassess. Tomorrow is another day.Do or do not. There is no try. (Yoda!)

You can get insured MUCH cheaper than that, I got a quote (Im 22) on a 1.8l mondeo (M plate I think) diesel, for £370-400 or so, after a purchase price of £500! (this did include putting my husband on a named driver, he's 34 but it took the price down £300!!) so you could put your dad on as named. Try the AA, their cheapest for me.Mummy to two girls, 4 & 1, been at home for four years, struggling to contend with the terrifying thought of returning to work.0
