Flora Thompson's magical memoir, a charming love letter to a vanished corner of rural England, is brought to life in this warm-hearted adaptation. Set in the Oxfordshire countryside in the 1880s, this rich, funny and poignant series follows the relationship of two contrasting communities: Lark Rise, the small hamlet gently holding on to the past, and Candleford, the wealthier market town bustling into the future.
Seen through the eyes of young Laura, played by Olivia Hallian (Sugar Rush, Torchwood), their inhabitants endure many upheavals and struggles as the inexorably change comes; their stories spirited and uplifting. Laura herself faces great change when she leaves Lark Rise to start a new life under the wing of the independent Dorcas Lane, played by Julia Sawahla (Pride and Prejudice, Absolutely Fabulous), the post-mistress at the post office in Candleford. The pair epitomise the force of friendship as they see each other through the best and worst of times.
Lark Rise to Candleford chronicles the daily lives of farm-workers, craftsmen and gentry, detailing the little conflicts, romances and misunderstandings between the tiny Lark Rise and the more worldly Candleford. Laura feels these tensions through her own very private tug of love, as Dorcas and Laura’s family back home seem to pull her in different directions. With her loyalties divided, she must choose her own path to womanhood...
This heart-warming drama which also stars Dawn French (The Vicar of Dibley, Jam and Jerusalem), Oliver Grant (Midwinter Closer, Stardust), Ben Miles (After Thomas, Coupling) and Brendan Coyle (Prime Suspect, True Dare Kiss) will be available on a 4 disc DVD from 7th April, priced £34.99. This delightful DVD features all ten episodes of the series plus a “making of” including cast interviews.
