Sketchup 6.0 for so much more than just designing a dream home...

Options
Hi,

I don't normally post in the forum as I leave that to the editorial team, but was playing with www.sketchup.com at the weekend and was amazed by how easy it was to input a floorplan to scale and then make it 3D. The best thing about it is of course - IT'S FREE!

The five minute tutorial gives you everything you need to get going and then you can add components (if you feel like it) such as doors, windows, tiles, which are free and have been created by other users of sketchup.

Initially I started playing with it as a bit of fun and out of curiosity but quickly realised that it is a seriously useful and powerful piece of software.

In a matter of seconds i was able to see how much room my sofa would take up (vertically and horizontally) in the sitting room - whether my cupboards and my bed would fit in the bedroom and so on.

If you are thinking about buying any piece of furniture and would like to see what it would look like in situ, sketchup is a real help and can save a lot of hassle later!

Enjoy,

Richard

The are quite a few free cad programs the ones listed are personal editions of software used by multi-million pound companies. They might not be as easy as sketchup but they offer different capabilities.

This is a great little tool for playing and doing some more useful stuff as stated.

It's also good for anyone interested in 3D modelling at a higher level. I'm a hobbyist 3D games programmer, and I want to get my son up and running, he already has an interest in this area. I plan to take this route as a starting point.

Anyway, the reason for my post is that anyone who does want to take 3D further, Sketchup models will import into another free 3D modelling application called Blender. This is a package that is as close as you get to professional software without paying and without any restrictions - it's open source software.

    Blender website : http://www.blender.org/

    Sketchup to Blender : http://www.blendernation.com/2006/05/11/import-sketchup-and-google-earth-files-into-blender/

Fantastic Youtube movie of a blender animated film: http://www.plumiferos.com/

Please bear in mind this is not simple software, it highly a complex modelling, rendering and animating application. If you want simple, stick with Sketchup! If you want to convert your plan into a photo-realistic render, this is your next step :)
    Thanks in advance,

    Steve V
