Very lovely place - small but lots to see and many changes of scenery. You can get there by ferry - either from Lymington to Yarmouth, Southampton to Cowes or Portsmouth to Ryde. The websites are either Wightlink or Red Funnel. You can go as foot passenger or take your car. Have a lovely time.

my granny used to live in ryde and I used with my parents and stay with her for the first 18 years of my life! I love i.o.w and yes there is tonnes to do and it tends to have good weather - even if it is raining in portsmouth it can be good on the i.o.w
the island is very small so easily travelled with a car (best) or the bus system which is also good. I think the island is only 40 miles across and 20 miles north to south.
there is loads to do especially if you have kids - just pick up the "things to do" leaflets which are free on the car ferry across.
as for getting there - you used to be able to fly to southampton and then get the boat from there but I am not sure if this route still exists.
Another way I would consider is flying by easyjet to gatwick (the furthest south of the london airports) and then hiring a car and driving down from there - probably 1 1/2 - 2 hours to portsmouth. If you are doing this book your car ferry tickets online at www.wightlink.co.uk and they are cheaper than waiting till you get there. Through the day in the summer there is a ferry every half an hour.
Let us know how you get on.

Heavens, that would take a long time! Have you looked at a map? Ferry routes as listed above.

We flew to London, then took a bus to hovercraft then across and used train and bus to get around the island. It is lovely, just a bit of a nuisance getting there from here.

seriously fly to southampton, then get yourself over to portsmouth for the hovercraft - not difficult and not awkward or long. and we used a bus to get around when we got there.
