Barclays shares tomorrow?

Just read about the barclays tax avoidance and subsequent attempted gag order on the gaurdian.I wonder how the shares will take it tomorrow.Strange how its not been more on the news.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2009/mar/17/barclays-guardian-injunction-tax

I always said they didnt want the HMG seeing the books with regard to bailout money , looks like we now know why.....wont take long for hmg to set a special unit on them to see what else lies under the covers.

If theres to be a bad bank maybe barcs will bear the brunt as the sacrifical lamb , theres no govt shares in this one to lose money on.Pehaps thats why the arab money contracted in double the investment as profit if it was nationalised.

NR2 for savers?
Have you tried turning it off and on again?

Any accountant will tell you there is a massive difference between tax avoidance and tax evasion.

I would be suprised to find any company that does not avoid tax in some way or another.

If the rules were simplified it would make the system much easier to police but government wont vote for that one. How many mps are on the board of companies etc?

Most have their noses in the trough.

I'm not clear why its bad news for shareholders that Barclays have avoided tax....surely this is good news for shareholders? What am I missing?
  • Maybe it's because now that the news is 'out there' and HMRC are a bit wiser as to what Barclay's Bank have been doing, they'll no doubt be banging on Barclay's door pretty soon to present them with a tax invoice.

This will likely cost the bank a fair few quid (not to mention the potential share-price hit), at just the time when they can ill afford it.
    Mortgage Feb 2001 - £129,000
    Mortgage July 2007 - £0

I still don't get it...I'm obviously having a really thick day, because hasn't it been legally avoided, rather than illegally evaded?

Thank goodness its not just me. :o:beer:
  • Why would Barclay's seek a court injunction to suppress the articles if they were simply legally avoiding tax?

It strikes me that there's a little more to this story than meets the eye.

It strikes me there is more to everything that meets the eye. I hear, on my travels, lots of banks are uncomfortable about even normal releases of information ATM.

Possibly to stop people like you thinking "Theres no smoke without fire Barclays must have done something wrong"

P.s. not trying to defend Barclays one way or another, but as soon as stories get into a newspaper a fair proportion of people reading it believe it.
