If there's a recession on, why's everything going up in price so much!?

Too right mate, Arcam recently announced their prices were going up by 30% for most lines - although their agressive price slashing of EOL stuff is still in full swing, and I'm torn between an AV350 or a projector at the mo :)

If you don't mind me asking, what did you pick up?

Please! Buy next level up 2nd hand.

Buying new AV equipment is like paying full price for a Mondeo.
  • Denon AV-R 1909. It's for my "home cinema" set up, along with a Wharfedale Diamond 9 5.1 speaker package.

The amp was £342 (discounted price), and suddenly now it's £399! And a couple of other bits I've bought have done the same.

More by luck than judgement but I seem to have bought just at the right moment.

I posted before Xmas that the smart move would be to buy your imported plasma TVs etc. from the stock then being sold by stressed shops - the chance won't come again!

I bought a new model Panasonic plasma in November, cringing as I did it thinking "bet this'll be 2/3 the price I'm paying after Christmas".

Cheapest anywhere on the net is £100 less than I paid (and I bought from my local Panasonic dealer too so would expect to pay slightly more).

So yup, I'd say you were dead right.

Niiiice :) I picked up a Denon dvd player a few years ago, the 2200 with the most amazing picture I've ever seen... until last week when it was blown out of the water by a 1080i upscaler 1/5 of the price, I was gutted!

I remember when the Diamonds first came out, the press went mental over them. Good choice mate.

I also picked up a samsung LE37A656A before Christmas for £624, cheapest price is now £650... looks like I got lucky on that one :)

abaxas - thinking about buying second hand (I'm on AVF pretty much every day), but there's nothing like that new toy smell!!
I am not really an Eskimo. I can hear what you're thinking... "Inuit!"

I've got the old 300 and can't praise it highly enough..... go for it!
  • Everything imported is going to get more expensive - not only due to the exchange rate, but to the factory closures worldwide (look at Panasonic!) - less competition.. Not just electrical goods, food as well (not to mention wine.... ;'-)
  • I don't get the top end AV market. Whilst the improvement in picture and sound is probably there, is it 5 times better than the cheaper set up the rest of us have? I mean, £30 on some interconnect cables !!!!!!......

The sweet spot seemed to be the Boxing Day sales. I bought a Samsung 50" 1080p plasma for £629. It's now £999 in Comet.

Well some would argue, but in general of course not. As improvements get harder to make (ie at the top end of whatever range we are tlaking about) the price increases out of proportion with the improvement.

Tis the same with all (most) things technical..... cars? computer chips? etc

It's all about how much money one has as a disposable income.

Spending £100k on a home cinema installation is clearly out of the question to the majority but peanuts to a few. Same argument but at a more extreme scale

    Big deal.

You've bought an asset that won't be worth more than you paid in 5 years.... not even remotely close as it will probably be an old technology by then. But we all know this when we buy them.
