It's the closest thing to Kit you're going to get for your car (think David Hasselhoff) and for the second year running will probably be the Christmas prezzie of choice.

Prices have been rocketing down recently, so while it's been the subject of a Great Hunt before, it's time to do it again.

The aim is simple, I want to tap MoneySavers collective research power to find the UKs chepaest and best.

Maplin are offering pre-orders for the Garmin StreetPilot i3 for £199 delivered. This is a self-contained unit with GPS receiver and screen, similar to TomTom's Go, so you don't need a PDA to go with it.

If you sign up to Maplin's newsletter you will be emailed vouchers for £10 off £100 and £30 off £300 which you could use to further reduce the cost.

The user interface is operated by a scroll wheel rather than a touch screen. It's very small but it does have a colour screen and 3-D moving map display. It has full UK postcode support. I'm told it works with the UK speed camera database available for free download from Pocket GPS UK.

The Garmin StreetPilot i3 is cheaper on the Maplin site than the lower spec i2! Also it's possible to add speed camera POIs so this seems a bargain at the £189.99 you can get it for by registering with Maplin.

Never ever bothered with them as I know how to read a map, its just another toy to chuck money at.

And I plan my trips before heading off. Now thats the cheapest way I know.

The i3 at Maplin is out of stock online, but don't forget Maplin pay 2.5% cash back too on GreasyPalm if you want to back order one.

Just looked at the Maplin website for info on their FAQs, as there is normally a link to ask a technical question, and I noticed the following text...

Streetpilot i3 In-Car GPS Navigator Manufacturer: Garmin

Because of the amazing price of the Streetpilot i3, vouchers to the value of £10 and below cannot be used when ordering this item.

PeteW: To ask a specific question that hasn't been covered by the extensive(!!) FAQ section of the product, just go to the FAQs and click on "Ask A Question".
