Car Rental Company Demanding Money Or They Take Me To County Court

Can anyone help me?
The story from the beginning is it all started two and a half years ago, I booked a rental van to hire for the weekend, when I went to collect the luton size van, the rental company said that my pre booked van was involved in an accident the night before and that the only vehicle that they had on site was a old 7.5 ton lorry,
I wanted to have the use of a van for the weekend so I accepted the lorry not van for the weekend hire, it was a nightmare, the lorry did not have any air brakes, I had to virtually stand up to push very hard on the brake pedal to get the vehicle to slow down, it also steered to the left badly and the gears did not select without many try's to engage the gears.
This was a vehicle form hell specially going up and down the hills around this way,
I returned the lorry on the Sunday evening to the rental company, there was no one there, I just parked it up and put the keys into the key safe on the side of the building as arranged.
I left it at that, the vehicle was returned and nothing else said, I never reported the dangerous vehicle to the company
A few weeks later I received a letter form the rental company in the post stating that the vehicle that I hired was involved in an accident and I am to pay £1000 in excess to them as I never reported it, I di dnot know what they were on about so I just ignored the letter, this was mid 2016
I moved house since then and recent in December 2018 I received an email from the rental company Ref Outstanding balance of £1000.00 owed and that unless I pay the £1000.00 within seven days they will start county court proceedings against me for the money.owed also additional court cost.
My question is: Can the rental company take me to county court regarding money owed for vehicle excess of £1000.00 for an so called accident regarding the hired vehicle which happened 2.5 years ago? I just hired the vehicle, used it and returned it. now 2.5 years later I am being threaten with a court case.
Do I deny being involved in any accident in 2016 with the rental lorry,? Yes I do deny this,
What are my rights here, can they take me to court for this which I deny had happened, can they demand £1000.00
Your help/advice is most welcomed, thank you all

Sorry OP, looks like your fault as you admit to ignoring their letter then moving/etc.
Pay up and draw a red line under it

An accident? Have you asked them for more information about this? It's probably a good place to start, they could be charging you for all sorts.0
