I would advise contacting your social services dept who should be able to direct you to an advocacy group which will specialise in interpreting for you or representing you with companies such as this who seem to think that the DDA does not apply to them. Best of luck and let us know how you get on.

Thank you for that information - I had thought of that today funnily enough, have you used them yourselves or do you know somene who has?

Face to face I have no problem as I lip read and have 2 aids, the reason I am not coping at the mo is because I have changed my aids to digital and the phone at home is a 'nightmare' now. No aids = no hearing for me. It takes on average about 2 months for a visit from s/services, the last one did!. I am going to draft another letter tomorrow anyway, so hopefully that might do the trick!
:D Opinions are like bottom holes, we all have one :D

my point is you are complaining of discrimination by DCA - they would be if they were refusing to accept a call from another person on your behalf or refusing to speak to you through the Typetalk service.

Its very possible to get help in buying the equipment through social services/charities or using DLA money so being in debt has no reflection in being unable to purchase technology.

I also believe im not unusual in being able to phone people as a deaf person using the right equipment. Its very patronising to say "which is more than can be said for alot of deaf people" making out they are unable to do this!

Lilac Pixie: My point is this post gives off the disctinct impression of a deaf person being unable to do something thus adding to barriers/perceptions of deaf people - OP is WRONG to say that being deaf makes a person unable to use a telephone! I'm just trying to point this out as I feel slighted by this statement - it is possible for deaf people to access equipment to allow them to do this!

Ms Rocks - I do believe that you are missing the point here. Sure, funding is available for products such as typetalk and minicom from Access to Work - note the word Work, they do not providiing funding for such equipment for use at home. It appears to me that you are a leading expert in obtaining equipment for use at home and would suggest that you advise everyone on here how it can be done. The OP has already explained that she has difficulties in using a normal telephone and why should she use a third person to relay her wishes over the telephone - have you not heard of the Data Protection Act? It could be that the OP doesn't want everyone to know her business and doesn't want people to intercede on her behalf on the telephone. It is not unreasonable to expect the DCA to be compliant with the DDA - this law applies to everyone and not just the select few.

I find your comments on this posting most unhelpful, discriminatory and downright rude. How dare you call into question a person's disability, this person is a relative newbie to the forum and I feel sure that after your uncalled for poisonous comments that she is unlikely to return in the future. I hope that you will take time to reflect on your poisonous comments and offer the OP a full apology.

    Horace,

you too are missing the point. The 3rd party telephone call need not divulge any information. Only state the reason for not being able to.

I also don't think that MiniLauraRocks comments were as you put it "poisonous" Merely stating fact as she saw it from having been in the same position herself.

There is always another way to try.

I am sorry for the OP situation, but I can see this from both sides.

KTjazz - worried I have just made myself very unpopular.
