sewing machine just went 'pop' :(

Me and the other half (who ignores the male stereotypes and can sew competently) just got an old Singer machine from a carboot for £18 - it looks about 60s-70s to me? Anyway. I plugged it in today, pressed the pedal - and yay it works. Then while I was working out how to thread the thing there was a 'pop' and smoke started coming out of the back of the machine around where its plugged in
Any ideas what this might be?

This happened to me and it was the motor... it had blown and I had to get a new motor fixed.... it wasn't that expensive...#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

Gosh, how frustrating for you! I hope the other posters are right - you'll still have a bargain if so!Resolution:

just thought i'd update on this....
i decided to be brave/silly and plug it in again and... it works!!! completely baffled by this but I've now made a nice tote bag and it's working absolutely fine. I'm confused!0 -
Probably an accumulation of dust burnt off. As you don't leave a sewing machine running unattended you will likely be OK now. I have to say that I admire your nerve for trying it again, but how moneysaving was that!0
