I've got quite a bit of 'free' stuff from buying magazines (Grow Your Own is a good one to keep your eye on). They tend to have packets on the front and often offers on the inside. I've also had free hand tools, books and stuff like that.
I know this doesn't strictly help you, but I've also bought a lot of seeds in the sales (half price) and even managed to get asparagus crowns for 50p at my local garden centre. Cheap stuff might a good starting point if you need stuff quickly.
If you're green fingered you could also try and beg cuttings off people to propiagate them.
Sorry if I'm stating the blooming obvious! hope some of this helps anyway...

This offer end 30th September so better hurry! Here dead we lie because we did not choose
To live and shame the land from which we sprung.
Life, to be sure, is nothing much to lose,
But young men think it is,
And we were young.
