First thing you need here is a source of income - anything - to get some money coming in. Can you get any shop work (shifts at a supermarket?), cleaning jobs locally, bar work, anything to get some money in? Can you give riding lessons or walk dogs for a bit of extra money? Have you checked what benefits you are entitled to? If you have no income you must be entitled to some. This is to tide you over and stop your sutuation getting worse.

What is the timescale on your business plan? It sounds like an expensive though lucrative idea - does it depend on financial input from you? Will you receive income from it? Unless this is iminently going to start paying (which doesn't sound likely if it us in planning) you need to find work to tide you over. To be honest I would be looking for something part time that won't get in the way of working on your business as you may need to carry it on for a while while the business gets established.

I've tried advertising for tutoring, but no takers (I tutor the daughter of the woman I keep my horse with in exchange for field). Now it's the wrong time of year. I applied for exam marking, but got turned down :( Nobody wants me! I apply for jobs and everyone says I'm over qualified! What can I do!

Re advertising, where did you advertise? I put notes up in shop windows when I started and only ever got one lead that way. Better is to get in touch with local schools themselves. If a child is looking for a tutor, their first port of call is usually their school. In at least two schools locally that I have tutees from, I know the science department don't have any names to give out (I'm maths) because I often get asked to recommend people after they've had no luck there. If you look on the TES site, I've seen HODs bemoaning the fact that they are asked by students to give out names of tutors and they don't know any to give. It may take a year or two to make a name for yourself, but if you enjoy the tutoring that you do already, I really recommend it.

Definitely a good time of year to contact schools though. Speak to the HODs before the end of the year. Then contact them again in September and you won't be a new name to them.

    Good luck.
  • Thank you all so much for your replies.

I really don't want to do supply work - can't stand the thought of going back in the classroom.

As for lab stuff, my degree is 'sciencey' enough for it. Animal science has really hindered me. I've tried local unis and colleges and there's nothing going. My NVQ stuff is all animal related too, and looking at jobs in the North East it's all beauty/engineering/IT/labouring stuff which I'm not qualified to assess. It's been a real pain in the butt.

I'll def have a look at CCCS - thanks for that.

We're going though a round of redundancies at work & to gauge what's "out there", I did a general search for Jobs in the North East on the Jobcentre plus site just in case I'm selected for redundancy.

I noticed a few jobs working with animals including a couple of Groom/Stable jobs.
