I'm scared

Last September my relationship broke down and I moved away to be with somebody else. When I moved I left a good paying job, but had no debt to speak of. I survived Oct, Nov, Dec and Jan living on credit cards and o/d until I got a new job, but it's only part time and the pay is poor.

I've now got the following and I don't know what to do:

2 x Barclaycards = £1600 & £500
1 X first Direct o/d £700 (old account)
1 x barclays o/d £600 (new account)
Vodafone £222
Studio £80
Simply Be £600

I have literally no money as I am £100 over my overdraft limit with barclays and I don't get any pay until the end of the month, even then it'll be swallowed up in being over my limit.

I have bad credit rating from a while ago and no lenders will touch me. I just don't know what to do.

Haven't told OH about the scale of it, we keep our finances separate. He's brilliant in that he is paying everything house wise. I'm worried though because we are looking to set up our own business soon and my credit rating will hinder that. ideally i'd like to take out a loan to pay everything off and just have 1 payment a month, but I'm currently only earning £340 a month and with my bad credit, it's just impossible.

    Hi IT

Glad that you cannot get that loan, as it would not be the answer to your problems. Not least, you would then be commited to the payments for years, even if the income improves and you could pay it off earlier.

    HAve a look here http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/loans/debt-help-plan#help

And maybe give one of the debt charities a call.

Also read this http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/protect/make-money to see if you can make a few extra quid. There is a £10 per day monthly challenge on here as well.

What can you do to increase your "proper" income as well? Is there anything that you can sell on e-bay, amazon or at a car-boot sale (still in your parent's loft)?

  • Hello and thank you for replying. My problem job wise is this:

I have the following quals and exp
    12 GCSEs
    3 Science A Levels
HND & BSc in Animal Science
D32/33 NVQ Assessor in Animal and Equine Care
2 years SA & Equine VN experience
Years of working with horses (BE/BSJA/BD grrom, showing yada yada)
    QTS qualified science teacher

I don't want to teach anymore (that's the job I left), but I don't seem to be qualified to do anything else and no temp or recruitment agency wants me as they say I'm over-qualified. I'm looking at trying to work for myself in the short term whilst the long term plan for mine and OHs business comes to fruition, but what?

I have been selling things on ebay, but they don't go for much, and I honestly now have no money to pay for postage. I do some private tuition, but that's in exchange for keeping my horse in their field for free. I've advertised for tuition and nothing, applied to exam mark and got turned away. I don't really know what else to do.

A couple of things then - locum work (teachinG) what is it called? At least it pays.

Who says you have to put all you quals on an application form?

Do you have a Uni near you? Invigilating, lab work, admin, anything?

where are you based?? do you think of working in lab as lab tech?? with science teaching experience, you can work in uni, school. in universities lab tech salary not too bad and more relaxed than teaching/ marking etc.

I was going to echo RAS....dumb your CV down a bit...keep the post A level stuff vague if you want...figure out where you want to be and what employer wants to hear...then change your CV to fit.

    good luck....

suggest trying on the employment/job seeking board as well...there are sometimes idea on there too.
For what I've done...I start again...And whatever pain may come ...Today this ends... I'm forgiving what I've done -AF since June 2007

moderating, invigilating, look to get into NVQ work as an external verifier?

How about working at Adult Education? Most of the managers where I work are former teachers.

One dont be scared your debt is not that bad. some on here have debts over £60000 so i would say keep calm have a cuppa and ring cccs their website is www.cccs.co.uk i would ring asap as with debt it goes up with late charges charging you for sending letters to you about your debt:mad: etc. going on a dmp now will hopefully freeze interest and get your debt down as soon as possible.

we are all worth more than debt.:A

  • Thank you all so much for your replies.

I really don't want to do supply work - can't stand the thought of going back in the classroom.

As for lab stuff, my degree is 'sciencey' enough for it. Animal science has really hindered me. I've tried local unis and colleges and there's nothing going. My NVQ stuff is all animal related too, and looking at jobs in the North East it's all beauty/engineering/IT/labouring stuff which I'm not qualified to assess. It's been a real pain in the butt.

I'll def have a look at CCCS - thanks for that.

regarding ebay and postage, you should be charging extra for postage and not sending the items until the buyer has paid you, sorry if i have misunderstood what you wrote but sounds like postage is coming out of your own pocket
  • I do charge extra for postage, but when it is paid by paypal I have to wait until it's transferred into my bank account - about a week - as I literally have no money to pay the postage at the post office. Does that make sense?
