I don't know that the difference is between dried or fresh yeast but I have been told that supermarkets will give you free yeast from the bakery department. I havn't tried it myslef as I don't have a bread make (YET), can anyone confirm if this is true?

No, you can't use fresh yeast, it just doesn't work the same in a breadmaker. You need the fast acting stuff in the packets.

I've just 'upgraded' to the Panasonic 252 which was only around £60 from Amazon. I couldn't see that spending another £20 on the automatic nut and seed dispenser that I was never likely to use was money well spent. Seriously, are you going to add things to the top of your bread on a regular basis?

Hi Sue, the dispenser on the 253 model is for adding things like nuts, seeds, dried fruit etc to the dough mix to save you hanging around and waiting for the beeps to tell you when it's ready, and will mix them in and not just leave them sitting on top of the loaf. I think the only things they say not to put in it are chocolate chips and grated cheese as they'll go soft and stick in the dispenser from the heat given off.

It is a bit of an added luxury and not necessary for someone only making plain loaves, and I did think twice about paying the extra to have one, but I'm so glad I did now. I'm terrible at forgetting things and I might not always hear the bleeps so my loaves would be missing vital ingredients :rotfl:

  • In the meantime, I've been making mean savoury muffins with leeks and courgettes. I make a batch of 12 and my husband and son have wolfed half of them down before they're properly cooled. My dieting will power is definitely being put to the test!

I don't suppose you have a recipe for those do you? ;)

We love muffins and I've also got some courgettes that need using up, which have to be "hidden" in stuff for DS to eat them otherwise he refuses them point blank!

It's out of stock again, I'll look later.
  • Courgette and leek muffins

    1 medium leek, sliced finely
    3 small courgettes, grated
    2 cloves garlic, crushed

    300g SR flour
    2tsp curry powder
    1tsp ground cumin
    1tsp ground coriander
    100g butter, chopped
    60g grated cheddar
    2 large eggs, beaten
    250ml milk
    2 tablespoons olive oil

Fry leek, courgettes and garlic until soft and the liquid has evaporated. Cool and sqeeze any excess liquid.

Sift flour, curry powder and spices into a large bowl and rub in butter. Stir in courgette mixture and cheese, then eggs, milk and oil.

Spoon mixture into greased muffin tray and bake in 200 degree oven for 20 mins.

    - the recipe says use buttermilk but I use semi skimmed. I also only add a splash of sunflower oil instead of the olive oil. It also says to grate some extra cheese for a topping with salt and pepper but I haven't bothered with that.

They taste a bit like a cross between onion bajees (sp sorry!) and muffins and I love them!

Also, I tend to make the courgette mixture when I'm cooking dinner, stick it in the fridge then do the rest the next day.

I have the sd253, have had it for a year now and have only bought three loaves since, I use it every day, my pref is the milk loaf excellent for slicing for sandwiches. Have to admit though I usually make my loaf the night before because its to warm in the morning for the kids sandwiches.

My only gripe is I wish I had two buckets but a new bucket is about £40.
    £2.00 Savers Club = £34.00 So Far

+ however may £2 coins I have saved in my Terramundi since 2000.

    Terramundi weighs 8lb 5oz
