It's not worth it for me

After reading about people making there own bread.
i got my breadmaker out of the spare room, and read the books, etc
I decided to give it a go.
This week so far i've spent over a tenner and not a load in sight.
All are flat as a pancake, i've tired doing my own recepie out of a book.
water/flour/brown sugar/milk powder/salt/oil/yeast and nothing
then i bought those ready flours you just put water to and again nothing.
Today i even tried a ciabatta mix and it came out about 1 inch high, and was naff.
So this week has cost me a tenner, hardly moneysaving for me.

Saint_Chris, what a disappointment! What type of BM have you got? I'm sure there are people on the board who could suggest a recipe that works in the same model. I've got a Panasonic SD254 and have only had one disappointment since I got it at Christmas. Haven't bought shop bread since;) ( tell a lie, think I've bought one loaf, when I was pushed for time;) )You never get a second chance to make a first impression.0

Lots of people are having problems at the moment because the wheat harvest has been poor. Poor in the sense the wheat hasn't been of the same quality as usual. May be you've just been unlucky? I've been using Lidl's bread flour and have been very pleased with it. Usually I've used much dearer stuff, like Doves, or the Canadian stuff from Waitrose. Could you try just using the BM to mix the dough and then let it rise in a warm place and bake in the oven.
I have a Morphy Richards and the family love the bread rolls I make using it to make dough or a crusty loaf, pizza dough etc.
The dough also makes great cinnamon buns or cheese and onion buns."This site is addictive!"

Hi,have you checked your yeast,I had a few problems then realised the yeast wasnt suitable for breadmakers,just a thought.0

like many others I've used BM's for years and tbh there is very little that can go wrong.So either you are putting too much water in,the flour isnt strong enough or the yeast is stale.Other than that the only thing I can think of is that your heater element has gone in the BM.But I assume that the flat bread is still baking then this cant be the case.
I'd take this back to basics and first of all find out which order you put your ingredients into the machine as some prefer yeast first whilst others prefer liquid first.Then ensure that the salt and the yeast are kept apart to begin with otherwise the salt will prevent the yeast working.
I would recommend that you add lukewarm fluids as this sometimes gets a better rise
You can check the gluten content of flour but I only have a vague recollection of how its done.So cant help on that one.
But I wouldnt give up yet with a little perseverance and tweaking provided your BM isnt knackered you will get a good loaf out of it

mine wasnt turning out good either:( i had to take the blade out after it did the dough but when i did that it would collapse.
if i left it in it was hard and had a blade baked inside lol
ive packed it for when we move:o:cool:minds is willing , soul remains, this woman cannot be saved :cool:;););););););):A;);););););););)
