confused about IPA's

Hi,
I have just received a letter this morning advising I will need to make IPA payments of £50 a month, which was unexpected as I have only £50 spare and I thought it was amount of £99.
I emailed this morning to ask for a breakdown of the figures to see how they got this payment to be told it is worked out using a IPA calculater and the examiner included health and emergencies in my figures, if I want them to re do it they will not be included and it will cost me more monthly!
I thought that was a bit unfair!
Has anybody else had experience of this, should I just leave it as I don't want to annoy them all to much!
Also just wondered as my rent is increasing by £10 per month from June and I am in the process of arranging my student loan repayments as they have not taken them when they are supposed to have done for past few months and these both affect my disposable income.
Confused! x

hi the only thing i can think off is that your OR hasn't allowed you some things on your I&E therefor giving you a larger disposable income,
it does seem a bit unfair though did the say they had disallowed anything?BSC Member#99

Hi,
Just have to say i think you must be very lucky to have emergencies included in your I&E as i've never heard any OR allowing them. I would say stick with the £50 IPA as you would recieve a higher one.
I'm sure there are people out there who would love to have an IPA of £50 instead of hundreds of ££££'s think yourself lucky.0 -
HI POG
Just looked at your previous post and SOA.
Did you put down for the wedding and driving lessons? If so that may be the reason for the IPA as they've been disallowed.
I'd have thought that they should have contacted you and told you what had/hadn't been allowed .The first time we said hello, was the first time we said goodbye. As the angels took your tiny hand and flew you to the sky-you forever left us breathless. RIP my beautiful granddaughter0 -
That is why I am confused as all my outgoings we ok'd by the OR on the phone, no didn't include wedding or driving lessons or anything like that they have been scrapped.
Obviously I am pleased to only have an IPA of £50 but as it is based on what you can afford and it will really be a struggle, nevermind.
Thanks for your help guys0 -
Once you have finalised your student loan repayments then call your OR and ask for the IPA to be reviewed due to new expenses. It should change when your circumstances do.0

In theory if they haven't taken the money for student loans payments over the past few months, and you have it included in your I&E, then you should still have that money sitting in the bank unspent.
In theory anyway....BCSC Member 70:j

I had my housekeeping amount of £200 agreed on the phone but when I got the paperwork to sign it'd beed reduced to £163.. was a bit of a shock as took me to a higher percentage but he did agree other things and let me keep my car so didn't query it.
Did you include your student loan payments on your I&E? if you haven't then when the payments are sorted out they should take you below the £99 limit so you might not have to pay an IPA.
Basically an IPA of £50 would suggest a surplus of around £100, any further increase (rent, student loan etc) will take you below £99.:hello:Save a little money each month and at the end of the year you’ll be surprised at how little you have.An eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind0 -
POT Just a thought!
You are asking for a breakdown of how they got to those figures, not to have it re-done. They must have a copy of your IPOQ with the figures on so why can they not just send a copy, had one with mine. If it where me i would ring them and explain why you are asking. At the same time you can then explain about your rent increase and ask if you are allowed to put your student loan payments downs!!Free impartial debt advice available from: National Debtline - Tel: 0808 808 4000 | The Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) - Tel: 0800 138 1111 | Find your local Citizens Advice Bureau

Hi PotofGold
From what was said when I got sent my IPA and also from some of the bother that ClaireLR has had, I got the impression that they sometimes set a standard IPA of £50 and wait to see if people challenge it.
If I were you I would follow the advice above and ask for a breakdown. Mine was easily resolved thanks to the wonderful people in here pointing out that they couldn't count my Child Benefit as income (stangely enough, the IPA vanished when I pointed that out to the OR...), but you never know what they have done until you get the breakdown.
Good luck
