Sad but true. Even sadder, it's not just the supermarkets, other retailers do it too.
I have been contracted to several major retail operators that adopt regional models (or at least did when I worked for them, policies can change of course).
Businesses included opticians, tyre/exhaust fitters and car dealers.
My advice ... move to Stoke-on-Trent, everything's cheaper there. My eyes! The goggles do nothing!0 -
I'm sure I heard somewhere that the stores in the "better-off" areas (not here!!) charge more than the same stores in the chain in cheaper house price areas. I wonder if its true? perhaps we could do a price check to see???????????
I've also read that if a supermarket moves into an area, it charges less than other shops to get custom. The other shops then are forced out of business. The supermarket then has a monopoly and can charge what it likes.
Take a look at Shopped by Joanna Blythman. She explains this and other practices. Indeed, if you're interested in food policy, any of Joanna Blythman books are a must.

We have both, one of the most expensive Tescos in Britain, Five miles from where I live and six miles in the other direction we have one of the cheapest in Britain. Infact I have been told that the expensive one is the most expensive in Britain!!
Living in Cornwall, our coastal towns are now populated by the very wealthy second home owners, whereas our inland towns are still some of the poorest in the country.
Could be true. The Morrisons in Newquay is supposed to be one of the most expensive. Yet in Bodmin yesterday 20 miles away, I had some unbelievable deals...NO to pasty tax We won!!!! Just shows that people power works! Don't be apathetic to your cause!0 -
Thanks PP. I checked... Amazon have a copy for 78p, so ordered it. I prefer non-fiction to fiction and anything about nutrition, health and food interests me.Penelope_Penguin wrote: »I've also read that if a supermarket moves into an area, it charges less than other shops to get custom.
