New guidance for voluntary NI contributions for time abroad including transitional arrangements
There's finally been an update on the transitional arrangements. Here are the criteria for paying voluntary contributions under the old 3-year rule:
You must meet all the following:
you applied to pay voluntary Class 2 or Class 3 contributions for the 2024 to 2025 or 2025 to 2026 tax year on or before 5 April 2026
you paid the voluntary contributions you applied for on or before 5 April 2027
you apply to pay Class 3 contributions for the 2026 to 2027 tax year on or before 5 April 2027
So anyone who's currently regularly paying Class 2 or Class 3 contributions is in the clear and can remain under the old rules (with the change that from next fy it's only possible to pay Class 3 contributions - you'll get a letter about it in July), and everyone else has a short window of time to apply to pay under the 3 year rule.
