Cash gift card

Thinking of gettting a gift voucher card for a new mum, instead of baby gifts. Where is the best place to get a cash gift card and how does it work?  I want to avoid those cards limited to retailers.

Why not just put cash in a card? Which this seems like you’re doing but with an extra step.

Yep, agree. It seems like less thought, but it's actually a much better gift - even a more generic gift card ties them to having to go to specific shops.

For free, non-judgemental debt advice, try: Stepchange or National Debtline. Beware fee charging companies with similar names.

Thank you. Sorry how do I put cash in a card? Who offers this, Post office?  And would it have an expiry date like the retail gift cards?

Umm, I meant put literal notes inside a card. Then put that in an envelope.

Or send money to their bank account as cash in envelopes isn't a great idea given the chance of it going missing xxx

Personally, I still send cheques in these circumstances. I have a number of young relatives who live at a distance and would never, as explained above, post a card with cash in it.

If you do want to send a gift card then Asda or John Lewis would be safe bets depending on whether they have these stores available and which end of the baby gifts market you're looking at.
  • I got a Little Starts gift card at my baby shower and honestly it ended up being one of my favourite gifts. I used it for baby classes in my area, which was such a nice change from getting more stuff. Definitely a great idea if you’re not sure what to buy.

This is one of the reasons Martin Lewis doesn't like gift cards:

The best is to offer cash in envelope and she can choose herself how to spend the money
