Why don’t you ask him?
Or do you want us to have a guess?

Was this the "I agreed to buy a used car the other day, collecting soon, and I've just seen online that it's now taxed... Why?" question?
I'd have thought "ask the vendor" not only a perfectly appropriate reply, but about the only one that can possibly be given.7 -
Maybe an idiotic question.6

In which case, so long as the tax was started from 1st of this month onwards, the OP loses nothing by the car being taxed ready for collection and it would make the collection (which I think was to be this weekend) simpler and more straightforward.
Unless the OP was concerned that the car had been taxed in someone else's name and the OP would be asked to pay that tax as part of the purchase price but then the refund goes back to someone else when the V5C is sent in to DVLA. That would be a complex fraud for little gain so seems unlikely.1 -

Personally I thought the first response to this question was a reasonable one... Slightly wish I'd responded quoting the OP now!1
